From Diapers to D-SLRs:

Tips for Managing a Photography Business as a Mom

Being a mom is hard enough, but add running a photography business to the mix and it can feel like trying to balance a camera on a spinning ball while blindfolded! But don’t worry, fellow mom-photographers, we’ve got this. Here are some tips to help you manage your photography business while keeping your family life (and your sanity) intact.

Set realistic expectations:

Just because you’re a supermom doesn’t mean you can do everything at once. Prioritize your tasks and give yourself grace when things don’t go according to plan. That school project due tomorrow or your toddler’s meltdown might take precedence over editing those photos.

Delegate:

You don’t have to do it all on your own. Ask for help from family and friends, or hire a virtual assistant to handle some of the administrative tasks.

Get organized:

Use a scheduling app, a to-do list, or a bullet journal to keep track of appointments, tasks, and deadlines. Trust us, it’ll be a lifesaver! Make sure you have a great CRM (Client Retention Management) platform to help you stay on top of contracts, sessions, marketing and more. I use Sprout Studio and it’s an amazingly robust platform that helps me stay organized in my day to day business processes. https://sproutstudio.com/

Be flexible:

Being a mom means being ready for unexpected situations. Embrace the chaos and be willing to reschedule a shoot or move a deadline if needed.

Take breaks:

Whether it’s a coffee break, a quick walk, or a yoga session, taking some time for yourself will help you recharge and come back to work with fresh eyes and a clear mind.

Create a schedule that works for you:

As a mom, you have to be a master at juggling different roles and responsibilities. Figure out what schedule works best for you and your family and stick to it.

Invest in the right tools:

A good camera and editing software are essential, but don’t forget about things like backup drives, tripod, and extra batteries. Invest in the tools that will make your job easier and save you time.

Network with other mom-photographers:

Being part of a supportive community can make all the difference. Join online photography groups or attend local meetups to connect with other mom-photographers and share your experiences and tips. In Dallas Fort-Worth, we have a special Facebook group of photographer moms where I can exchange ideas and be apart of a community of busy super women creatives near me. https://www.facebook.com/groups/498024280252771/

Use social media to your advantage:

Social media is a great way to showcase your work, connect with potential clients, and promote your business. Just don’t forget to set boundaries and take breaks when needed.

Embrace the chaos:

Being a mom and a photographer means embracing the unexpected and finding joy in the chaos. So, go ahead and let your kids photobomb a shoot or two, it’ll make for some hilarious and memorable photos!

Running a photography business as a mom can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. By taking it one day at a time, being flexible, and prioritizing your needs, you can create a successful and fulfilling business while still being the amazing mom you already are.

So, grab your camera and let’s do this, mom-photographers! We’ve got this!
